In a significant victory for the Walton community, Peterborough City Council has decided to withdraw the Walton Community Centre from an upcoming auction, following concerns raised by local residents and Conservative councillors.
The centre, located on Mountsteven Avenue, was initially scheduled to be sold at auction on May 1, with a guide price of £175,000 to £200,000. The sale was part of the council's efforts to reduce its £500 million debt. However, the decision to sell the building prompted concerns from local Conservative councillor Alex Rafiq, who represents the Walton area.
Cllr Rafiq expressed his shock at the council's decision, stating that he had recently informed the council of a local health provider interested in purchasing the centre. He emphasized the importance of finding a local buyer to ensure the building's continued use for community services, rather than allowing it to be converted into flats, which could exacerbate existing traffic congestion in the area.
Following these concerns, the council has decided to withdraw the Walton Community Centre from the auction and is now exploring alternative options for its future. Cllr Rafiq welcomed this change of direction, highlighting the importance of preserving community assets for local use.
