Councillor Raja Sabeel Ahmed has called for a wider approach to tackling anti-social behaviour and begging across Peterborough following discussion at the Economy, Inclusive Growth and Environment Scrutiny Committee.
Speaking at the meeting, Councillor Ahmed raised concerns that while Operation Horizon focused on issues including anti-social behaviour and begging in the city centre, residents in other parts of the city are also experiencing problems.
In particular, concerns have been raised about the impact on communities including West Town and Netherton, where residents have reported seeing increased issues in their neighbourhoods.
Operation Horizon was launched by Peterborough City Council in August as a two-day operation focused on city centre issues, with the council subsequently creating a City Impact Team to continue working with partners on issues including anti-social behaviour.
Councillor Ahmed said that tackling problems in one area should not simply result in concerns being experienced elsewhere, and called for a co-ordinated approach that considers communities across the whole city.
He said:
“Residents across Peterborough deserve to feel that their concerns are being listened to, wherever they live. We need to look at the wider picture and make sure communities outside the city centre are not overlooked.
“Tackling anti-social behaviour requires a coordinated approach, working with residents, the Police and council services to make sure concerns are properly followed up and communities receive the support they need.”
Councillor Ahmed will continue to raise the concerns of West Town, Netherton and other communities where residents are experiencing issues with anti-social behaviour and begging.
