On May 8, 2025, Mayor Paul Bristow attended the national service of thanksgiving at Westminster Abbey, commemorating the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day. Representing the people of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, Mayor Bristow joined members of the Royal Family, including King Charles and Queen Camilla, Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and veterans to honour those who served in World War II.
The solemn service featured hymns, readings, and a two-minute silence, providing a moment of reflection on the sacrifices made for peace and freedom. A symbolic candle of peace was lit by Winston Churchill’s great-great-grandson, Alexander Churchill, underscoring the enduring legacy of those who fought for liberty.
"Attending the VE Day service was a profound honour," said Mayor Bristow. "It is our duty to remember the bravery of those who came before us and to ensure that their sacrifices are never forgotten by future generations."
In Peterborough, the community marked the occasion with various events, including the raising of the Union Flag outside the Town Hall, a vintage tea party at City College Peterborough, and the illumination of Peterborough Cathedral in red, white, and blue. These activities served as a testament to the city's commitment to honouring its history and educating younger generations about the importance of remembrance.
As the nation reflects on this significant milestone, Mayor Bristow's participation in the Westminster Abbey service highlights the region's dedication to preserving the memory of those who fought for the freedoms enjoyed today.
