Peterborough Conservatives have expressed their disappointment after the Labour Government announced that a decision on the future of Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough has been delayed until the autumn.
While the Government confirmed decisions for almost every other area undergoing local government reorganisation last week, Cambridgeshire and Peterborough have been left waiting, with Ministers saying that our proposals require further consideration before a final decision is made.
Although it is essential that the right decision is reached for the long-term future of local government in our area, this latest delay creates further uncertainty for councils, councillors, staff and residents.
The prolonged wait also leaves existing councils with less time to prepare for what will be one of the biggest changes to local government in decades. Whatever model is eventually approved, significant work will be needed to ensure services continue to be delivered effectively and residents experience a smooth transition.
The uncertainty also presents challenges for the democratic process. Political parties, prospective candidates and campaign teams are unable to properly plan for the 2027 elections while the Government continues to delay making a decision on the future shape of local government in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.
This latest announcement is yet another example of a Labour Government that seems unable to make timely decisions. Having already become known for delay, indecision and policy U-turns, Ministers have once again left local communities waiting for answers on an issue of enormous importance.
As we now await a decision in the autumn, we urge the Government to provide clarity as soon as possible. Residents, councils and those working to prepare for the new authorities deserve certainty, not continued delay.
