Local Conservative Councillor Raja Sabeel Ahmed has welcomed plans to invest £3.8 million in refurbishing Jack Hunt Swimming Pool but is urging Peterborough City Council to ensure the project delivers far greater benefits for local residents.
While supporting the significant investment in the facility, Cllr Ahmed believes the refurbishment should go beyond improving the building itself by increasing opportunities for the public to make use of it.
Cllr Ahmed said:
"I welcome the proposed £3.8 million investment in Jack Hunt Swimming Pool, but this refurbishment must also deliver much greater access for local residents.
Residents should have more opportunities for evening swimming, AquaFit sessions, family sessions and affordable public use. Not just limited access around schools and swimming clubs.
I would also like the council to consider adding a sauna, steam room and jacuzzi or hydrotherapy area. Not everyone can swim, but they should still be able to benefit from this important community facility for relaxation, rehabilitation, health and wellbeing.
This is a major investment, so it must create a modern and inclusive centre that serves swimmers, non-swimmers, older people, disabled residents and families across the local area."
Cllr Ahmed believes the refurbishment presents an opportunity to create a modern leisure facility that meets the needs of the whole community. Alongside essential improvement works, he is calling for increased public access and additional health and wellbeing facilities so residents of all ages and abilities can benefit from the investment.
He said that with £3.8 million being invested, local people should expect more than just a refurbished swimming pool. The project should create a welcoming community facility that supports fitness, rehabilitation, relaxation and wellbeing for everyone.
As the plans progress, Cllr Ahmed says he will continue to press for the refurbishment to deliver lasting benefits for residents and ensure the investment provides value for the wider community for many years to come.
