02/02/10 - CITY MP GIVEN ALL CLEAR BY EXPENSES AUDITOR

Jackson cleared Legg by expenses audit

City MP Stewart Jackson has been told that he has nothing further to pay back, following an extensive audit of his Parliamentary expenses and allowances for the years 2005 to 2009, by Sir Thomas Legg QC.

This followed on from another detailed audit by the Conservative Party’s Scrutiny Panel in 2009.

Mr Jackson voluntarily paid back £1277 in May and June 2009, including costs related to swimming pool maintenance and gardening but has been told that only the swimming pool costs were deemed retrospectively impermissible and so he is not required to make any further payment.

Sir Thomas Legg examined every MPs second home allowance in detail over the last four months.

Mr Jackson said:

“I am very pleased to say that my claims – with the exception of one invoice in 2006 and which I rightly repaid after the rules were changed last year – have been found to be within the rules, quite proper and value for money for the taxpayer, having been thoroughly audited by two separate sets of accountants.

There was never any question of avoiding tax, “flipping”, claiming for luxury items or anything which broke the House of Commons rules.

The expenses system has now been overhauled and as a frontbencher, my claims are routinely available in the public domain.

I remain focused on working hard representing the residents of Peterborough, as I have done for the last 5 years in Parliament and I will campaign on a record of action and achievement at the coming General Election.”
