
MP for Peterborough Stewart Jackson has today expressed his concern at the news that the running of the East Coast Main Line has been taken into public ownership.
The troubled rail franchise, which is expected to have lost £20m in the first half of the year, is suffering from slumping passenger numbers.
Ministers have refused requests for the contract with National Express to be renegotiated.
National Express won the franchise from GNER in 2007.
Stewart commented:
This is clearly a concerning development. It is disappointing that the franchise bidding process was so driven by the Treasury to mean that National Express appears to have over-stretched themselves.
